Many fans of the Premier League in general were left perplexed after Maurizio Sarri opted to rest N’GoloKante, Eden Hazard and Callum Hudson-Odoi for the game against Cardiff City in March.
The three are viewed as some of the most talented players in the Premier League. Kante and Hazard are widely regarded as being among the best in the world in their respective positions while Hudson-Odoi is regarded as being one of the best up and coming footballers.
The Blues are also pushing for a top four finish and surely one would expect them to start their top talent in every game between now and the end of the season?
In spite of the trio missing out on the game against the Bluebirds, Chelsea still want on to win the game, though they were made to work very hard for the three points. For much of the game, it even looked as though Sarri’s charges were set for a humiliating defeat against the relegation-threatened side after Victor Camarasa put the home side ahead during the 46th minute of the game.
Two late goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and Roben Loftus-Cheek allowed the Blues to win and claim a valuable three points. Sarri was widely blasted for his decision to omit Hudson-Odoi, Hazard and Kante from his starting xi. However, speaking after the game, the former Napoli boss defended his decision.
As reported by Football Transfer News, he said: “I cannot think that Kante, Hazard can play 70 matches in a season.
“Kante has played 50 or 51, Hazard 48 with today and in the last period played two matches with the national team. Probably in the season you have to rest.
“At the end we were lucky as we got three points, it is important for us to have them in a good physical condition.
“I know very well Kante and Hazard are important players for us, I know they cannot play 70 or 75 matches in the season.
“You have to decide. It is not easy.
“You have to choose the right moment. You have to decide.”
